What's New...
In the past few months we have been scrambling from airport to airport trying to gather as much
empirical data as we can for the Airfield Marking Best Practices Handbook. We have been beating back rain and cold
weather in the hope that painting operations continue. The 1952-D waterborne paint that many airport crews
customarily use is hindered by weather if the temperature drops below 45 degrees F. However, a new product has
become available this year, and may offer a larger window for paint crews to operate.
Rohm and Haas has developed a new resin for the traffic marking industry. The product is in the
Rhoplex Fastrack family and is simply named XSR: X-tended Seasonal Range. This cold weather paint may offer a better
alternative to using solvent-based paints. XSR may prove to be extremely useful to those airports in the freeze/thaw
regions, as it is capable of being applied in temperatures as low as 35 degrees F. For more information about XSR,
check out the Rohm and Haas Newsroom online - search for "XSR" in
the Headline box.
