Virginia Statewide Marking Assessments

The Commonwealth of Virginia has become the first to conduct statewide assessments of its airports' pavement markings using
the Marking Condition Index (MCI).
Alongside pavement evaluators, All About Pavements (API), Sightline is evaluating the marking systems at Virginia airports in
every corner (and there are several) of the state. We are wrapping up the assessments, and have learned a lot in the last two months.
For example, we learned South Boston, Virginia is slightly different than the well-known neighborhood in Massachusetts, and its
residents are puzzled when you refer to it as "Southie".
During another evaluation, we visited New London, Virginia, home to the only runway/drag strip I have ever come across. It
currently resides at the top of my "Favorite Alternate Sources of Airport Revenue" list, rocketing past now #3 "Economy Childcare" and formerly
#1 "Pay to Flush".
In addition, we've learned a lot about the needs of the airports in the Commonwealth. Our mission is simple; gather data,
report findings, prioritize and budget remediation, and finally tailor recommendations for each airport. We're just about done with the first task,
next we'll start wading through all of the information we've collected.
Think your state should include markings in its statewide programs? Let us know who to talk to, or call your state officials at the
Department of Aviation. We'll continue to keep you updated as to our progress in the next webletter.
