Airport Improvement
By Mike Speidel
Airport Improvement Magazine recently wrote a piece about a Sightline project in Milwaukee, WI, published in their January/
February issue. The article was focused on the Marking Condition Index (MCI) performed at MKE last fall. The MCI is similar to that of a Pavement Condition Index, however is
focused on the marking system, naturally. Thanks to Paul Bowers and the AI staff for a job well done; read
the article.
In summary, the piece describes how Terry Blue, deputy airport director, believed the marking system at General Mitchell could be more efficient but didn't know where
to begin. Seeking expert advice, he spoke to Donna Speidel at the MKE-hosted Airport Marking Symposium in June of 2009. After a brief discussion and tour of the airfield, it was
agreed there was room for improvement, and a comprehensive audit of processes and program would need to be completed.
The audit itself is a point by point survey of the airfield marking system, evaluating existing markings about several criteria. Once defined, a multi-year maintenance
plan is tailored specific to the airport's needs, addressing both the short and long-term. In MKE's case, Sightline made recommendations for not only maintenance but also material
selection, equipment procurement and provided cost projections based on labor time, square footage of application area and application rate. The recommendations to MKE are all
expected to yield a more efficient marking system, saving time and money, and create a safer navigating environment.
