In theory, evolution generally occurs for one reason: necessity. Adaptation to one's environment is key for survival,
and we're all interested in surviving. In essence science tells us if a change is perceived to be needed, the change will be made in
our best interests. We've come a long way as a society during our existence... well, most of us have anyway!
The FAA, or "faah" as our ancient ancestors would have grunted, has stressed the importance of reducing runway
incursions for some time. The FAA by its nature is an oversight organization, not an enforcement agency. Everyone involved with
aviation is responsibile for taking the written regulation and making it reality. After all, it's in our best interest.
Pavement markings on many airports we visit still appear to date back to the Mesolithic Era. Whatever the reason for
that is, the necessity for a safer environment has been defined, and we must adapt to make it a reality. There are a few tools
available to you if you choose to improve the culture surrounding your airfield markings. The
Airfield Marking Handbook was published late last year, which I fondly refer to as
the modern day Renaissance. Sightline is also spreading knowledge around the nation through our regional
Airfield Marking Symposiums. Not to mention our tribe will come to your village if it
is so desired.
We have made fire, it's your opportunity to use it. Step out of the Stone Age and evolve already.
