Sightline In Bahrain
By Donna Speidel
"I didn't know there was so much to know about airfield markings," is a standard comment we receive after our
Markings Matter presentations. But after speaking at conference in Singapore a year ago, Mr. Muneer Yaquby, Manager of
Construction Projects at Bahrain International Airport, amazed us with not only his understanding of the message, but also his
conviction that markings can make a huge difference in airport safety as well as the overall appearance of the facility.
When we arrived in Bahrain in February to provide consultancy services to BAH, we realized the attitude toward
improving their markings is shared by all concerned. When the Director of Engineering and Maintenance, Mr. Abdulla Ahmed Mohammed,
voiced the same sentiments, it was clear the attitude toward markings begins at the top.
If the decision makers for the airport consider markings to be an important part of their safety enhancement
program, things start to happen. Markings are observed more carefully, scrutinized, often found wanting, and steps are taken to
improve them. Owning a philosophy that is proactive rather than reactive will improve airfield safety.
Personnel at Bahrain International Airport took that step by contracting with Sightline for a complete airfield
marking evaluation (Marking Condition Index). We are committing our expertise and professional network to evaluate the issues and
prescribe solutions. Armed with accurate information, specific recommendations, targeted training, and enforcement, Bahrain
International Airport will have better-performing, longer lasting airfield markings. Their investment will result in a higher
measure of safety and improved appearance. Ultimately, they will realize a savings to their marking budget as well as the amount
of time they are devoting to marking maintenance each year.
