The standard marking material for AOA surfaces is a federal specification fast dry latex paint (TT-P-1952D, Type I or Type II). Type I is a fast dry (3-5 minutes), Type II is a super fast dry (1 minute) (under daylight, low humidity conditions). Although the durability of 1952D is only 1-2 years, depending upon the amount of traffic the markings sustain, the ease of removing latex markings in the event of a change in markings is desirable. (I.E. If the runway is being lengthened, widened or a traffic pattern is changing on taxiways or aprons, the markings must be moved. Minimal damage to the pavement in the removal process is desirable.)
Other durable markings that provide a longer life are epoxy, methyl methacrylates, high build acrylic paints, thermoplastic, cementitious polymers, etc. They are applied at a greater mil thickness than latex paint and have bonding characteristics that defy spalling and peeling. These materials are suitable for markings in locations that are not subject to change within 5-15 years. Although the initial cost to apply the markings is higher, savings may be derived from better durability (hence visibility) and lack of additional dollars for maintenance. If these markings need to be removed, however, milling or grinding would probably be the only effective method of removal, causing some damage to the pavement surface.
